Interrail vs. Eurail: Which Pass Do You Need and How Do They Compare?

by TrainTripsEurope, published: april 2025

If you’re planning a train journey across Europe, you’ve likely come across two similar-sounding passes: Interrail and Eurail. But which one do you need, and are there any major differences? In this article we’ll explain the differences and similarities.

Who can use an Interrail or Eurail pass?

  • Interrail Pass: Available only to European citizens and residents.
  • Eurail Pass: Designed for non-European travelers.

This means that if you live in Europe, you need an Interrail Pass, and if you live outside Europe, you need a Eurail Pass.

Can both passes be used in the Rail Planner app?

Yes! Both the Interrail and Eurail passes can be stored and used in the official Rail Planner App, where you can plan routes, check timetables, and activate your pass for travel.

Are Interrail and Eurail the same price?

Yes, in general, both passes cost the same for the same type of ticket (e.g., 7 days in 1 month). However, occasional promotions or discounts may apply to one pass and not the other.

Are there any differences?

There are very few differences between the two passes:

  • The Interrail Pass cannot be used in your own country for unlimited travel (except for one inbound and one outbound journey).
  • The Eurail Pass has no such restriction, as it’s meant for visitors from outside Europe.

Both passes give you access to the same extensive train network across Europe, work in the same app, and cost the same. The main difference is who can buy which pass and how they can be used in your home country. Make sure to choose the right one based on your place of residence, and you’ll be ready for an unforgettable European rail adventure!
